How effective is CBD as a sleep aid? First, there are four key elements to cultivating relaxation: a quiet environment, a focus of attention, a passive attitude, and a comfortable position. Finally, let’s talk about cannabidiol, aka CBD. A trending supplement for a balanced life, but let’s be real, it’s not a magic sleeping potion. Instead, it works differently in a way that it targets the cause behind your sleep disorder such as pain, stress, and anxiety. Studies show that CBD consumption stimulates serotonin and serotonin receptors. Serotonin is a naturally-occurring compound that regulates a multitude of biological functions. From stress relief to boosting the circadian rhythm, serotonin is a useful compound that collaborates with CBD. Serotonin has long been touted by research for its therapeutic effects, such as:

  • Decrease in stress
  • Regulating anxiety
  • Increase in mood/happiness
  • Promoting a restful night

As you consume CBD, the cannabinoids can interact with the 5-HT1A receptor group. Once stimulated, the 5-HT1A receptor is believed to promote a cascade of effects associated with an increase in serotonin.

Our melatonin level normally starts to work its way up about two hours before bedtime. Project CBD, a California-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and publicizing research into the medical use of CBD has done a survey on this matter. A total of 1521 survey participants reported using CBD for their sleep distress. The organization highlighted the fact that most participants were having problems staying asleep rather than falling asleep. In addition, 1110 participants reported having pain issue along with their sleep distress, 958 with mood issues, 304 with hormonal conditions, 273 with PTSD, and 228 with gastrointestinal disease.
